Boy Killed on the Other Side of Jesse Owens' Park
This week, a 14 year old boy was killed at 95th and Western (article says 94th, but the memorial is set up at 95th). This is beyond just the fact that the boy was killed because he was so young. At 14, you don't even know yourself. On Friday, I passed by the memorial, and took a turn at 94th. The neighborhood behind my apartments is fairly quiet, and I have gotten in the habit of passing through with out stopping fully at every stop sign. Of course, I was pulled over. I had to come out of my car, be searched and asked the usual questions (do you have weapons? are you on parole?where are you going? where are you coming from?). As soon as they figured out I was a teacher, they stopped asking questions and said I was good to go. I wonder what would happen if I was unemployed at the moment (like a gang of teachers are about to be) or if I was on parole, or whatever the situation was. Needless to say, it is a minor annoyance compared to the fate of the boy on Western.
